A Saturday afternoon art club aimed at 2nd-7th graders. Working with professional artists and art educators, each month's classes will explore a different genre through the student's own creativity and by discussing the work of famous artists.

Drawing with Thom Smith
Wednesday, 6 - 8:30pm
beginning Oct. 1 and running through Nov. 19, 2008
At whatever skill level you happen to be, this is the drawing class for you! This 8 week session offers you time to explore the art of drawing at your own pace. Challenge your understanding of this versatile media under the instruction of Columbia's own Thom Smith. A demonstration in each session will be followed by each participant taking part in a planned exercise with critique from the instructor. Exposure to the great drawings/draughtsmen of the past and present will be a part of each session. We're in for some serious fun! Download the supplies list (Word).

Beginning Watercolor with Janet Elmore

This class will explore the beauty of transparent watercolor as a vehicle for self-expression. Each week we will try out various techniques and apply them to our individual designs. As we experiment, we will attempt to enhance our personal creative styles. Subject matter for paintings can be the artist’s choice or still-life in the studio. Painting will be done in class with some completions on your own at home. Discussion of completed paintings will follow each assignment as we share ideas and learn from each other. Oil Painting with Thom Smith
Tues & Thurs, 6 - 8:30pm
November 4 - November 25, 2008
Since arriving in Columbia, Thom has been creating a stir with his lustrous oils and captivating sculptures. Thom's classes will focus on basic oil techniques, with an emphasis on alla prima painting using still life arrangements; drawing with paint; composition & design; tonal values and color. Weekend Workshops
Plein Air Acrylic workshop with Linda Wilmes
October 4-5, 2008
Saturday 10 am-1 pm, Sunday 10 am-5 pm
Explore the adventure of plein aire painting, where you will be encouraged to go beyond duplicating what you see in nature and paint what moves and inspires you. By studying the affects of light, composition, contrast, unified color and interesting perspective, you will learn all that is necessary to create a final painting that uniquely captures the moment and conveys the desired mood.
Linda is a self taught artist, from the rural Missouri county of St.Charles. Along with being an instructor of drawing and painting, she is an accomplished muralist. Her most noteworthy works can be seen in the dome of St. Joseph Church, Wentzville, MO., along with 8 large canvas paintings of saints and angels. Download the supplies list (Word).
Linda is a signature member of the St. Louis Watercolor Society, an art section member of the St. Louis Artists Guild, member of the Missouri Watercolor Society, and the Gateway Pastel Artists.

Art Without Borders (AWB)
Mondays: 9:30am - 12noon

AWB is designed to help people rediscover, or simply find, their inner artist. Recognising that many of us put our creative lives on hold to raise a family/go to work etc, AWB is an 'art sampler' allowing mature students to work with a different teacher and medium each week: mixed media, photography, drawing, watercolor and acrylics.
