Cheryl SchweitzerI’m a Missouri-born artist who has moved around and traveled, but I’m now happy to be back in Missouri. I take many digital photos of the places I go, and use them as references, sometimes combining many photos when I compose a painting. I paint mostly with acrylic paints in a traditional way…much the way I used to paint with oils, but with much more color and freedom. Any and every subject appeals to me, but the ever-changing landscape gets my attention often, including flowers and gardens. I paint whatever I’m in the mood for, and the blank canvas is just waiting for me to create. The height of pleasure for me is when I’m in a new painting and have found the zone, and everything is flowing from my eyes and brain, through my hands and tools and onto the canvas or paper. I know I’ve achieved my goal when someone sees what I’ve painted and understands what I tried to accomplish, and they love it as much as I do. I also paint with watercolors and oils, depending on the subject. My style has evolved into more of a realistic approach with touches of painterly impressions, instead of strictly realism. I’m drawn to scenes that have strong lighting and contrasting colors. Acrylic paints really allow me the freedom to do what I want since they dry fast and can be glazed or painted over often. Most people don’t like acrylics for that quality, but artists can learn to use that characteristic to their advantage and be happy with the results. I enjoy painting commissions and working with clients to achieve their goals. I teach acrylic, oil and watercolor painting of all levels in my studio in Jefferson City. |
